Objectives : As an introduction to the history of architecture, this course aims to discuss the discipline of architectural history with its various aspects, to examine the basic concepts and the terminology, and to introduce the outlines of major developments and characteristic periods in the history of architecture within the contexts of social, economic and geographic backgrounds, institutions, settlement patterns, building typologies and construction techniques.
Content : From the prehistoric period, the main periods of architectural history, Anatolian Civilizations, Central Asia, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Iran, Ancient Greece, Roman and Byzantine art and architecture, the main stylistic features, relations and interactions, and an introduction to the history of architecture through continuities. Reading architecture and developments in the context of space - people and society. Examples of monumental and civil architecture of the periods and their connections with architecture. Construction types. Plan types. Urban organisation.
