2 Gaining knowledge about the social, cultural, political and economic characteristics of Turkish states in history and the effects of these characteristics on translation culture.
3 Understanding the changes in the approach to translation in Turkish history and the reasons for these changes
4 The relations of Turkish states with other states throughout history and the internalization of the effects of these relations on the role of translation.
5 Examining the translation activities carried out in various periods and determining which translation approaches have been applied
Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week Topics
1 Introduction
Students are generally informed about the course obligations, course, testing and assessment methods, resources and applications. The questions of the students regarding the course are answered.
2 The Nomadic Period
Starting with the Göktürks, general characteristics of the nomadic Turkish states are emphasized and the effects of these features on translation and translation are evaluated. Through the translation practices in countries with similar geographic, cultural, economic and political characteristics in the period, an idea about translation practices in nomadic Turkish states is gained
3 Early Settled Period
Starting with the Uyghurs, the transition of the Turks to settled life and the effects of this change on the cultural and economic life of the Turks are evaluated. The effects of these developments in the society on translation practices and translating are discussed. The effects of religion on translation in Uyghur and Karakhanid states are evaluated.
4 Seljuk Period
The general social, economic and cultural characteristics of the Seljuk State and how these characteristics affect the translation activities in the Seljuks are discussed. Translators and translation activities of the period are examined.
5 Anatolian Seljuk Period
It is examined in what direction the social, economic, cultural and political characteristics of the Anatolian Seljuk State affect the translation activities. Especially developments in the field of scientific translation are reviewed.
6 Ottoman Period Between the 14th and 17th Centuries
It is examined in which direction the social, economic, cultural and political characteristics affected the translation activities during the establishment and development period of the Ottoman State. Translation activities carried out mainly in the commercial and political fields are discussed.
7 Revision prior to the midterm exam.
8 Post-18th Century Ottoman Period
In what directions the social, economic, cultural and political characteristics affected the translation activities during the decline of the Ottoman Empire are examined. The important translation activities, translation institutions and translation works of the period are examined.
9 Republic Period
Social, economic, cultural and political characteristics of the early years of the Turkish Republic are evaluated. In this period, approaches to translation and translation activities are discussed. Translation institutions operating in the period are examined.
10 1940s
Social and cultural developments in the Republic of Turkey during the 1940s and their impact on translation activities of these developments are examined. Especially how literary translations and translation institutions affect translation activities is evaluated.
11 1960s
Social and cultural developments in the Republic of Turkey during the 1960s and their impact on translation activities of these developments are examined. Especially how literary translations and translation institutions affect translation activities is evaluated.
12 1980s
Social and cultural developments in the Republic of Turkey during the 1980s and their impact on translation activities of these developments are examined. Especially how literary translations and translation institutions affect translation activities is evaluated.
13 21st century
Social and cultural developments in the Republic of Turkey during the 21st century and their impact on translation activities of these developments are examined. Especially how literary translations and translation institutions affect translation activities is evaluated.
