Developments in technology and market conditions create need for a new interdisciplinary engineering field. That new field is Mechatronics engineering which is supported by mechanical, electronic and computer systems. Mechatronics engineering is a multidisciplinary field that synergistically combines Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Control Engineering, Computer Engineering and Information Systems in order to design and manufacture useful products. The field of Mechatronics Engineering has been formed to respond to the current needs in the design of robotic, automation and intelligent systems used in the manufacturing plants and aerospace systems, motors and engines in the automotive industry, satellites and computer hard drives, modern medical and rehabilitation devices and instrumentation systems. Such systems use advanced technologies for sensing, signal conditioning, interfacing, actuating, communicating and controlling the electromechanical systems.
Desired mechatronics engineer is an engineer who has technical skills, knowledge from other disciplines and uses that information for synthesis. That engineer is supposed to have skill and knowledge on design innovative products and computer aided manufacturing. Graduates from Mechatronics engineering are highly marketable after in the following fields:
• Process management, planning, optimization, production and control,
• Space studies, navigation systems, avionics, computer-based control systems,
• Automotive industry,
• Data communication and networks
• Defense industry and military applications,
• System Dynamics, design, implementation and applications with CNC machines, intelligent machines and mechanisms, metal bending, joining, mechanical design and material selection,
• Electrical machinery, electromagnetic energy conversion, electronic control systems, embedded and real-time data acquisition systems, power electronics, mechatronics design and system integration, signal, image and sound processing, remote sensing, high resolution imaging and surveillance,
• Fluid Applications,
• Fuel cells,
• Home appliances,
• Human-machine interface application and ergonomics, industrial automation,
• Measuring, instrumentation, sensors and actuators,
• Medical and surgical instruments,
• Modeling and simulation, motion control systems,
• Mining, oil and gas industry,
• Renewable energy and nuclear energy,
• Packaging industry,
• Robotics,
• Unmanned aerial vehicles,
• Intelligent infrastructure, intelligent building systems,
• Systems Engineering,
• Wearable technology applications.
KTO Karatay University is one of the few institutions in Turkey that offer a dedicated Bachelor of Science program in Mechatronics Engineering. We have designed and implemented the academic program and course offerings for this program in collaboration with other departments from the ?Faculty of Engineering. Academic program is developed by comparing with domestic and foreign programs in order to reach the better. Student in this program can take courses only if they successfully pass preparatory class. During the first two years of this program, our students take core courses before moving on to take essential ?classes in engineering that shape their analysis and ?programming skills. Next, they take specialized courses that give them the opportunity to engage in teamwork activities and gain hands-on experience in design, modeling, simulation, and implementation of computer-controlled electromechanical systems. They learn about and prepare reports using the design-by-discipline (sequential) and concurrent approaches as practiced in Systems Engineering in the largest global firms. They also utilize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools in the mechatronics ?laboratories and gain practical skills working with Autodesk®, SolidWorks®, MATLAB Simulink®, National Instruments LabView® and Arena®.
The academic research activities of the Department of Mechatronics have been designed to enable students to secure a job in which they can express themselves and contribute to the common good of our country. We will achieve these goals by providing the time and resources for ?lab experiments, faculty-advised course projects, independent and senior projects, and ?the opportunity to have two internships during the undergraduate studies. According to their interests, students can take courses from academicians experienced in the fields of electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer, biomedical, nuclear electronics, signal processing, image processing, industrial control, communications, and defense technology. Students can attend national and international activities with their projects.
By the time of graduation, our students will have acquired the essential knowledge and skills that make them invaluable and highly sought after in aerospace, automotive, defense, oil and gas industries and any firm that develops technologies in embedded and real-time data acquisition, fluid power, fuel cells, household appliances, human-machine interface engineering and ergonomics, medical and surgical devices, power electronics, smart infrastructures, and wearable technologies.
